How could the Equation explain love at first sight? Actually, the mind works faster than we may believe. We may not be wrong to do so.

As Gladwell explains, usually these judgments are better than those of the slower and more actuarial part that carries out conscious reasoning. It works out a certain plan of action and continues to follow it even though the circumstances have changed and quite a different course of action is necessary.

Its decisions are much too general and do not correspond to the decisions which the emotional center would have made. The mind cannot understand shades of feeling. In love, we may make a split-second decision in the recesses of the unconscious, but we can easily be mistaken. We can also be misled. It is at this moment that a woman should surrender herself, to get the greatest possible sensual pleasure. The eyes of even the most modest women light up the moment hope is born; passion is so strong and pleasure is so acute that they betray themselves in the most obvious manner.

Although the reckoning may not be accurate, in most sane people it must fall within some range of feasibility. A man may develop an effervescent crush on a charming actress, but only a psychopath tries to track her down.

  • The lover begins to be less sure of the happiness which he has promised himself; he begins to criticize the reasons he gave himself for hoping. She is implying that she can do better than the man who is pursuing her—but not implying it so definitively that he gives up hope. Having driven another mistress home, he has come so late that Odette, supposing that he did not intend to come, had already left. Seeing the room bare of her, Swann felt his heart wrung by sudden anguish; he shook with the sense that he was being deprived of a pleasure whose intensity he began then for the first time to estimate, having always, hitherto, had that certainty of finding it whenever he would, which as in the case of all our pleasures reduced, if it did not altogether blind him to its dimensions.

This makes no sense in terms of ordinary reason, but in terms of the Equation, it makes perfect sense. If they were much higher, we would have no hope; if they were much lower, we would have no interest. Too much eagerness is usually a sign of some disparity. Or stupid enough? He permits himself to enjoy her as a mistress. The position is reversed only when he finds himself in doubt— when she is no longer to be taken for granted, when, in terms of the Equation, he is tricked into believing that she is of a higher rank than he is.

The Equation also explains many other mystifying aspects of romance.

Occasionally, the Equation even works when it involves someone an individual would be ashamed to marry. Her coldness and indifference certainly form part of her ironic attraction the one who is less in love generally holds the upper hand , but the curious imbalance in their feelings is partly due to a deformity in Philip. He has a clubfoot, so he sees himself as less desirable than Mildred. Instances of the Equation appear in many, if not most, works of world literature. In it Emma Woodhouse tries to find a match for her friend Harriet Smith, the bastard daughter of an unknown father.

Harriet is pretty and well brought up, but Emma persists in overvaluing her, encouraging her first to reject the suit of a yeoman farmer named Robert Martin and then to pursue a match with Mr. Elton, the local vicar. Emma tells her friend Mr. Emma, your infatuation about that girl blinds you. Elton: Depend upon it, Elton will not do.

Elton is a very good sort of man and a very respectable vicar of Highbury, but not at all likely to make an imprudent match. He knows the value of a good income as well as anybody. Knightley predicts. After some misadventures, Harriet ends up with Robert Martin, Mr.

    • Elton with a woman closer to his social position though inferior in brains and poise; the Equation often requires certain trade-offs. Emma and Mr. Knightley wind up together—again obeying the Equation: the two of them are the richest and most eligible people in their district. Too proud, they say. Of course he is the one she would choose. And so she should, and I have nobody and nothing to complain of. I myself am to blame. What right had I to think she might want to join her life with mine?
